We’re having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave!

I just cannot get over the amazing weather this week! And neither can our girls. Hives are all to bed, but we’ve managed to squeeze an extra week of feeding into the schedule. The girls have been going through at least one 250 mL mason jar a day and you can see, that after the one week of chill here in Ontario (frost abound) that they are loving the warm weather too.

Friday (tomorrow) we expect it to be about 20C in the morning, then quickly dropping down to 9C by the afternoon with some wicked 70+ km/h winds.

This autumn has been anything but calm as this will be the 8-9th day with winds so high. Usually we place a heavy limestone rock on the hive lid (care of the Niagara Escarpment backyard here) to secure it but we are thinking we may have to get some webbing to keep them contained. Last thing we’d want is the hive blown over and the bees unable to take cover in the rain.

Female honey bees guard the hive entrance. Handheld with my face inches from the hive entrance. Bees climbing all over the camera, so I had to keep brushing them off before spining the focus ring.
